Inositol
A carbohydrate-like compound that supports insulin signalling, hormonal balance, and mental well-being.
What It Is
Inositol is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell membrane as phosphatidylinositol, where it acts as a secondary messenger in insulin receptor signalling. It has been well studied in the context of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), where it improves insulin sensitivity and hormonal balance. It also has evidence for anxiety reduction and mood support, acting on serotonin signalling pathways.
What It Does
- Improves insulin receptor sensitivity
- Supports hormonal balance (PCOS)
- Reduces anxiety and promotes calm
- Supports ovarian function and fertility
- Structural component of cell membranes
Clinical Considerations
Very well tolerated. May cause mild GI effects orally — IV bypasses this. A clinical assessment is required for patients on mood medications.
